My Life and Times in Sitka with Edie
Deacon Edie Hockspeier, Organist and Choirmaster Emerita of Lutheran Church of the Ascension, shares stories and reflections from her recent summer in Sitka, Alaska, where she traded Savannah’s heat for cooler northern skies and volunteered at historic Sitka Lutheran Church.
Founded in 1843, while Alaska was still part of the Russian Empire, Sitka Lutheran has a fascinating history. Many of the Finnish workers brought to Sitka to help construct the city’s Russian Orthodox cathedral were themselves Lutherans. With permission from the Russian governor, they established their own congregation and built a Lutheran church that continues its ministry today.
Join Edie for a glimpse into the history, people, faith, and extraordinary landscape of this unique corner of Alaska.
